Mozart loved to write for String Quintet (two violins, two violas, one cello), but his efforts in that combination were not received nearly as warmly as his Quartets. He persisted, and fought to have the Quintets performed and published. Among these special pieces, the Fourth is especially meaningful as G minor was the key he used for his richest and most complex emotional content.
Miklós Rózsa started down the path of film composing as a way to supplement his income as a composer of concert works.
His film music, highlighted by Oscars for Hitchcock’s Spellbound (1944), A Double Life (1945), and Ben Hur (1947), eclipsed his original and true love of writing concert repertoire. He had to carve out time to work on his rich and complex concert works, including the beautiful and mysterious String Quartet No. 1, which gives us a heartfelt glimpse into his inner truth.
