SUNDAY 28 SEPTEMBER 2025
From what is commonly referred to as Beethoven’s middle period, his incredible string quartet Op. 59, No. 1 displays a command of string quartet writing that imbues the art form with meaning so intense and heroic that listeners at the time weren’t sure what they were hearing.

R. Murray Schafer’s monumental output of twelve string quartets organically combines an innate avant garde sensibility with a complete
comfort in the tradition of the string quartet resulting in works that are at once meaningful and inventive. His Quartet No. 11 draws in the listener with adventurous sounds and tells a powerful story with string quartet writing that finds its roots in the canon of the great composers who went before.
Combined together in one concert, these two works show us the limitless possibilities of the string quartet.
