SUNDAY 28 APRIL 2024

Johannes Brahms fully intended that his Op. 111 would be his last work. Still in relatively good health, he intended to enjoy retirement, riding triumphantly into the sunset, as it were. Though this didn’t turn out to be the case, this spirited and inspired gem would have been a suitable epilogue to an enviable career.

As early as 1958, Dmitry Shostakovich suffered from a debilitating neural disease that eventually made his right hand all but unusable. His failing health gave an urgency to his work with the reality that every piece, including his haunting and enigmatic 11th string quartet, could be his last.
