Matt Sellick
flamenco guitar
Matt Sellick is a Canadian flamenco guitarist and composer from Thunder Bay, Ontario, now living in Toronto. After having studied extensively in Spain with some of the world’s greatest flamenco guitarists, and having completed an HBMus at Lakehead University in 2013, he performed regularly in Thunder Bay for six years. In Thunder Bay, Matt is known for his solo shows, as well as his performances as a soloist with the Thunder Bay Symphony Orchestra and Consortium Aurora Borealis.
With funding from the Ontario Arts Council and the Canada Council for the Arts, Matt has produced four albums of his original solo guitar music. He has also orchestrated many of his pieces, and performed them to multiple sold-out audiences with the Thunder Bay Symphony Orchestra.
Matt’s third album, North Shore, was about bringing flamenco to the places that inspired him as a child. He travelled six hundred kilometres to visit, compose, and record in all the shoreline provincial and national parks between Thunder Bay and Sault St. Marie. Matt released this album in 2019, just before moving to Toronto to pursue his solo career and tour internationally with renowned Canadian guitarist Jesse Cook. In Jesse’s band, Matt has performed across Canada, in over twenty U.S. states, and in eight European countries. During the halt of touring due to COVID-19, Matt recorded his fourth studio album Uprooted and began teaching flamenco guitar online. He now divides his time between performing locally, touring internationally, composing, and teaching.
